3 Common Scalp Problems And How to Get Rid of Them

People often put a lot of effort into creating the perfect hair care routine but forget about nourishing the scalp as well. The scalp needs just as much care and attention as hair, maybe even more. Sadly, most people only care about their crowning glory but not the cushion where the crown sits.

Neglecting your scalp can result to many different issues. If you’re curious to find out what the most common scalp problems are and how you can avoid them and get rid of them, keep reading this post below.

Dry scalp and dandruff

The Issue:

Contrary to popular belief dandruff and dry scalp are not the same. Dandruff can be caused by a plethora of things including using too much shampoo, not using enough shampoo, not rinsing well enough, excess oil in the scalp, Malassezia, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema to name a few. Dry scalp, on the other hand, is often triggered by cold, dry air, or a reaction to the products you are currently using. What makes them similar, however, is the fact that they often result to flakiness in the scalp which can be really embarrassing.

The Cure:

Dandruff remedy can be as easy as using a good anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner or as complicated as going to the doctor to seek treatment. You can also try using home remedies like adding tea tree oil to your routine or crushing aspirin tablets and adding them to your shampoo before washing your hair. For dry scalp, adding a moisturizing step to your usual hair care routine can make world of difference.

Scalp Build-up

The Issue:

If you notice big chunks of flakes falling off of your head and you notice that your hair is taking a while longer to grow compared to its growth rate/speed before, you might want to check for scalp build-up. This scalp issue can be caused by excessive sweating, oil, or dead skin cells as well as excessive use of products on the hair and scalp.

The Cure:

Thankfully, hair and scalp build-up is pretty easy to deal with. To start, you’ll want to use a really good clarifying shampoo or a scalp cleansing shampoo once or twice a week. You’ll also want to add a scalp treatment step in your hair care routine. Of course, you’ll want to take it easy on the products, too, and you might also want to consider exfoliating your scalp to avoid build-up in the future.

Alopecia

The Issue:

Alopecia causes hair to fall out. While it may not be contagious, it can be quite embarrassing to have hair randomly falling off of your head and it can be alarming to some too.

The Cure:

Alopecia is a scalp condition that’s best treated by professionals but, while waiting for the treatments to work, you can always try to combat hair thinning and hair loss by using an in-home hair and scalp treatment like this one or by making sure that your shampoo and conditioner have ingredients that can help combat hair loss. These scalp treatment shampoos and conditioners may not solve the problem altogether but it can help you combat baldness in some ways.
